Narrabundah College Trivia Night 2013- Raising Dollars for Dili

Date this was actually completed: September 25th 2013

The 2013 Narrabundah college trivia night was aimed to help raise money for “Dollars for Dili”, a centenary of Canberra project that is sending funds to the city of Dili (capital of Timor Leste). It helps fund two major projects

1.       The construction of sanitation and health (toilet) blocks in nominated Dili schools; which should encourage more girls to attend school thus gaining better education and as a result, increasing employment opportunities

2.       The construction of an activity centre for Timor Leste scouts; an organisation that helps build confidence and resilience amongst young people and also develops their leadership and teamwork capabilities

The idea of the night was for students to form teams of 7 and to sign up for the night, each member being charged a minimum of $5 to participate. We ended up raising over $1000 because students were willing to put forward more than just $5 for the cause.

The night was themed "pirates, aliens and cowboys", each team required to dress up. Our team went with the alien theme and made some whacky looking costumes out of aluminium pie tins, foil and rubber gloves. It was really fun getting them all ready.

For the actual trivia component, there were 10 rounds and 3 bonus point games. Each round had a different theme and each extra game worth a different amount points.

My team and I worked really hard but unfortunately didn’t do too well. We were coming first after round one, but only went downhill from there. In fact, I’m pretty sure we finished second last. Despite this, I had a lot of fun.

The learning outcomes I believed the night encouraged were

-          Working collaboratively with others; through having to come together as a team to prepare our costumes and compete in the trivia

-          Engagement in an issue of global importance; learning about the Dollars for Dili project and actively participating in a fundraiser that promoted it

Here is a photo of some of my team and I (notice the chic attire)
